ABOUT THE FRIENDS OF THURSTON
A charitable community group, the Friends of Thurston (FOT) was originally formed in 2006 when a new shower & toilet facility in the main house left the old stand alone shower & toilet block, abandoned but full of potential.
A small group of very willing and enthusiastic volunteers with a passion for Thurston, its philosophy, impact on those that attend and quality of service, had plans for developing a campsite, which included the old shower block. With no funding a spark fuelled a flame.
A £10,000 Lottery, “Awards for All” grant was successful and work started.
(The site in 2016 was finally completed by South Tyneside Council including a 12 bed bunkhouse with solar slates, a meeting/dining room, 2 Pods, campsite and the old showers & toilet block upgraded).
We fundraise to enhance centre resources, organise working weekends, advertise the centre and help access for all.
Most members have first hand memories of Thurston having attended a course often in their school days.
